"Brasil Tropical" owes its existence to a group of young Brazilians, Edvaldo Carneiro for one, who got together in Salvador, the capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia, for the popular "Capoeira." This martial art demands power, quickness, cunning, daring and acrobatic skills. In addition to actively practicing the sport, Edvaldo Carneiro also researched the origin and tradition of capoeira, for which he was given the nickname "Camisa," or "Purple Shirt" in English.

"Purple Shirt" and his friends not only decided to interpret their beloved Capoeira on the stage but also to incorporate other aspects of Brazilian life, creating a full-length show of Brazilian rhythms, songs and dances.

Religious themes control the lives of the people from Bahia, particular those in Salvador. This is where the mysterious Afro-Brazilian Candomble ritual is celebrated, exalting and honouring the gods to the beating of drums, singing and dancing.

"Purple Shirt" soon had a group of outstanding musicians, singers and dancers together. After gaining the support of the choreographer Domingos Campos, a new form of dance theatre was created that had never been seen in Europe before.
